Early symptoms are usually nonspecific. Parents should ensure that children have regular medical checkups and be alert to any unusual, persistent symptoms. Signs of childhood cancer include an unusual mass or swelling; unexplained paleness or loss of energy; a sudden increase in the tendency to bruise or bleed; a persistent, localized pain; a prolonged, unexplained fever or illness; frequent headaches, often with vomiting; sudden eye or vision changes; and excessive, rapid weight loss.
